In this edition of The Thursday Tipple, I am going to go across the water to Cornwall in the U.K and review Wolf Rock Red IPA from Sharps Brewery. The ale got its name from the area in Cornwall where the Red IPA is made. I chose to review this drink because one I was intrigued by the mix of both the Red ale and the IPA and also it was on offer at €1 a bottle in my local Dunnes Stores. I’m a sucker for a bargain!
My initial impression was that there was a crisp taste upon the first sip. There is also a bitterness and sweetness to the taste of the Red IPA. Both tastes definitely compliment each other to deliver the crisp taste. There is a sweet at the start but the finish is quite malty/bitter. I found this to be consistent from the first drop to the last.
I found the packaging on this beer quite simple. As I have said previously I find that simple packaging usually lets the product do the talking. The packaging is a simple grey/blue colour with a silver trim and black text with the type of ale written in red.
As usual, this ale was advised to serve chilled. Unlike the last review, this drink was served chilled. I enjoyed it chilled, but I also felt it made the drink go down quicker! Sometimes there are some food recommendations as to what to eat with this type of ale. One of the recommendations was to try charcuterie meats with it. That is exactly what I did and I thought they compliment each other quite well.
Price: 10/10 priced at €3 which is in line with its competitors. It gets 10 because it could still be available at €1 in your local Dunnes Stores.
Taste: 8/10 The taste is as it is described, but I’m still undecided it is for me.
Packaging: 7/10 Very simple which is good, but I don’t think it would entice me to buy it at first glance.
Availability: 9/10 widely available in most good off-licences and supermarkets.
I hope you enjoyed this edition of The Thursday Tipple. If you guys have any suggestions of drinks that I should try let me know in the comments below or on any of my social media channels. Always remember to drink responsibly.
